Kamloops, BC—Although neither of them made the Canada West playoffs, members of the Thompson Rivers University Men’s and Women’s basketball teams are mentioned prominently in the annual “Howie”Awards published in today’s edition (Feb 13) of the Vancouver Province.
For the last five years, reporter Howard Tsumura has put out the awards: recognizing achievements made by players in the Canada West Pacific Division. He is aided in his poll by scouts and sports information officers located in the Lower Mainland.
This year, three members of the WolfPack women’s team have been recognized. Forward Tracy Kocs (1st year, Port Moody, BC) and post Diane Schuetze (1st year, Vernon, BC) were named to the All-Rookie team. As well, Schuetze was named as the ‘Rookie of the Year.” Says Tsumura in his column: “The touted BC Under 17 post from Vernon showed herself to be the foundation of the Pack’s future. Schuetze led her team in scoring (9.9 ppg), was second in rebounds (5.8 rpg) and her 107 free throw trips were among the tops in the conference.”
As well, coach Scott Reeves was given Special Merit. “He continues to build a contender in Kamloops. Reeves is keeping the vast majority of the region’s best preps and this seasons 3-20 record included an encouraging nine single-digit losses” raved the article.
On the men’s side: Jeff Friesen (4 th year, forward, Duncan, BC) and Drew Bleth (4 th year, guard, Ridgefield, Wash) were given Special Merit. “Despite a 2-21 season, TRU’s two top guns combed to average 31 points per game, 44 per cent of the Pack’s scoring.”
