For Immediate Release: November 7, 2008

Kamloops BC: On a night where the university raised a banner for a National Golf championship, The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Men’s Volleyball Team gave their fans their moneys worth. The WolfPack and the UBC T Birds went five sets before TRU prevailed 3-2.  The scores were 21-25,26-24,25-22,23-25,15-8.

“This showed how deep we are,” said WolfPack Coach Pat Hennelly, who’s team was playing without two of their veterans.  Fourth year outside hitter Behlul Yavesgal (Aydin, Turkey) and third year outside hitter Robin Schoebel (Monaco) were both out with injuries.  ‘Andy and Josh (Haley and Boruck) stepped in and played very well.”

Haley (5 th year, outside hitter, Stony Plain, Alta) had8 kills.  Boruck (2nd year, outside hitter, Revelstoke, BC) had 10 kills.   TRU was led by Junior National team member and CIS Rookie of the year Gord Perrin.  The Creston BC outside h itter had 22 kills.  He garnered the ‘Packs first 10 points in the decisive 5 th set. Martin Stenderup (2nd year, Ribe, Denmark) had 31 assists.

“We made far too many mistakes,” stated UBC bench boss Richard Schick.  “Their young guys are better than our young guys and they have more depth.  We need to find some consistency and we need to find it fast.”
UBC was led by 5 th year left side Steve Gotch (Okotoks, Alta).  He had 21 kills in 49 attempts.  5 th year setter Jarred Krause (Langley, BC) had 32 assists.
The WolfPack are now 3 and 0 on the young season. UBC falls to 0 and 3.  The same two teams play again Saturday.

SIDE OUTS:  The WolfPack honoured their CCAA National Champion Men’s golf team.  Festivities included performances by the Kamloops Taiko Japaneese Drummers and the Beattie School of the Arts high school band and dancers.   Perrin was honoured by Volleyball BC for winning the Ray Lepp scholarship.
