(Josh Boruk had the most kills in this one for TRU)
For Immediate Release: January 30, 2009
Calgary,Alta-The Calgary Dinos went into their final weekend of Canada West Men's Volleyball action with one goal. They wanted at least a split with the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in order to secure second spot.
They got their split. And it was easier than even they would have thought. The Dinos swept the visiting WolfPack in three straight sets. The scores were 25-19,25-15,25-22. Clagary is now 12 and 5 on the year.
"We looked intimidated," said WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly. "They came out and two of their guys made some big kills. I don't know what it is about Friday night. But for the second straight time, we didn't look good."
4th year outside hitter Omar Langford (Toronto, Ont) led the way with 15 kills and 3 errors in 23 opportunities. Andrew Tallas (4th year outside hitter, Red Deer, Alta) had 11 kills and 3 error in 19 attempts. He had a match high 6 digs for Calgary. The Dinos had a game high 20 service errors, compared to TRU's nine.
Hennelly said Langford and Oleg Podporin (4 th year, Kazakstan) were dominant with some big kills.
Canadian Jr. National Team member Ciaran McGovern (2nd year, Grande Praire, Alta) had 35 assists.
For TRU (now 10 and 7), they were led by first year outside hitter Josh Boruck (Revelstoke, BC). He had six kills and two errors in nine opportunities. 2nd year middle Stefan Savoie was also a strong contributor for the 'Pack.. The "Savy One" (Winnipeg, Man) had five kills in 11 tries with two errors. McGovern's teammate with the Jr. Nats, Gord Perrin (2nd year, Creston, BC) had three kills in 12 attempts. Behlul Yavasgel (4 th year, outside hitter, Aydin, Turkey) and Robin Schoebel (3rd year, outside hitter, Monaco) also contributed three kills. Setter Colin Jaggard (4 th year, Calgary, Alta) had 11 assists.
"We are in jeopardy of hosting now," said Hennelly, who hinted at sitting out Perrin for Saturday's final match of the regular season. "He has a sprain and we were only going to play him once. With 10 wins, it's very unlikely that we will host a playoff series."
Hennelly said on the bright side of this match: everyone on his bench got a chance to get some reps.
The two teams wind up their regular seasons Saturday (Jan 31) at the Jack Simpson Gym.
