WOLFPACK MVB LOSE 5 SETTER TO CIS CHAMPS

For immediate release: November 14, 2008
Kamloops BC; A lot of mistakes and a lot of errors. It was something both Thompson Rivers University WolfPack coach Pat Hennelly and his University of Alberta Golden Bears counterpart Terry Danyluk could agree on. Regardless, the fans at the Tournament Capital Center in Kamloops got their money’s worth.
The Defending CIS Champion Golden Bears took the Bronze Medal winning WolfPack in five sets in CIS Men’s Volleyball Action Friday (Nov 14). The scores were: 25-16,24-26,25-22,23-25,15-8. The Golden Bears move to 5 and 0 on the season, TRU drops to 3 and 2.
“This was very similar to our first match against Brandon during the opening weekend,” said Danyluk.
The Golden Bears wre led by 5 th year right side Joel Schmuland (East St . Paul, Man) with 19 kills. Thomas Jarmoc (4 th year, left side, Calgary, Alta) and Tim Gourley (5th year, left side, Grande Prairie,Alta) had 14 and 13 kills respectively.
“It was great to go five sets with Alberta,” said WolfPack coach Pat Hennelly. “It’s the closest we’ve ever came to beating them, but I expect both teams to play better tomorrow (Sat). We did miss an opportunity here, we pushed them in the fourth set.”
The WolfPack were led in the kill department by Junior National team member Gord Perrin (2nd year, outside, Creston, BC). The Canada West rookie of the year had 16 kills.
Hennelly thought that Robin Anders (4th year, outside hitter, Kamloops, BC), who was playing against his former teammates and Behlul Yavesgal (4 th year, outside hitter, Aydin, Turkey) were his clubs best players.
“I thought Robin had a little fire in his belly out there,” Hennelly stated. “He had something to prove. And Behluhl was exceptional considering he had only one practice coming off that ankle injury.”
Anders had 4 block assists. Yavasgel had nine kills and five digs.
One player who had a little incentive for Alberta was third year middle Justin Merta. The 6’7” Quesnel, BC native had friends and family in the stands.
“ I just wanted to have fun tonite,” he said. “ There was no real added pressure until it got close.” He laughed. Merta had five kills. “ We missed too many serves and had too many errors. We’ll do better tomorrow.”
The same two squads square off Saturday night (Nov 15) at 730 pm at the Tournament Capital Center.
