CLAN MBB: Wallis lifts Clan over WolfPack 83-60

November 28, 2008
Burnaby, B.C. – Greg Wallis (Victoria, B.C.) posted 28 points and 18 rebounds, as the Simon Fraser University Clan men’s basketball team defeated the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 83-60 on Friday night in SFU’s West Gym. The win improves the Clan to 5-5 on the year, while TRU falls to 2-9 on the season.
SFU opened the game on a 13-2 run, led by Wallis’ outstanding first quarter rebounding. Wallis had six rebounds in the first five minutes of the quarter, however the WolfPack answered with a run of their own, cutting the gap to 15-14 before the Clan closed out the quarter with a 6-2 run to lead 21-16 after one.
Simon Fraser extended their lead to six points at halftime, as Wallis was a rebound shy of a double-double at the break, going into the half with 11 points and nine rebounds to give SFU a 36-30 advantage.
In the third, SFU was able to push their lead back to ten points, while Wallis continued to roll, scoring 12 of SFU’s 25 points in the frame to give SFU a 61-51 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth was more of the same, with SFU out scoring TRU 22-to-9 in the final period to earn the 83-60 victory.
“It was a great game until the last seven minutes,” lamented WolfPack head coach Thom Gillespie. “They scored nine points with about 30 seconds left and that was the game. It wasn’t one of our most steller games. We get beat up on the boards. It was probably one of our poorer shooting games.”
Wallis finished the game 11-for-20 from the field for his 28 points, while adding 18 boards. SFU out rebounded TRU 56-to-31 on the night, with Matt Kuzminski (Nanaimo, B.C.) finishing one rebound shy (17 points, nine boards) of a double-double.
For the WolfPack, Greg Stewart (Kamloops, B.C.) had a team high 15 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the field. TRU was out rebounded 20-to-12 on the offensive glass.
“Greg was probably our best player off the bench”, said Gillespie “He got his points in only 17 minutes played.”
The two teams rematch tomorrow night at 5 pm .
