TRU MENS BASKETBALL DROP ANOTHER TO UFV
mbbgaramide mbbjfriesen

For Immediate Release-October 25, 2008

Kamloops-If basketball were only one quarter ,  then the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Men’s Basketball team would have their first victory of the young CIS Season.  Unfortunately, its not.  The WolfPack lost their second straight game to the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades 94-85.

“Our turnovers resulted in good opportunities for Fraser Valley,” stated TRU Coach Thom Gillespie “ I actually felt that they had 14 offensive rebounds at the half. That allowed them to stay in the game.  We had a lot of energy.  Down the stretch, they made some big shots and knocked down threes when they had to. We did a pretty good job defensively but sometimes the offense finished the sequence and that’s some times the difference in the game.”

Fraser Valley got balanced scoring. They had seven players in double figures led by Chris Laurie (4 th year, Post, Abbotsford, BC) with 17 points.  Mike Mckay (4 th year, Post, North Delta, BC) had 13 points and six rebounds. Sam Freeman (1st year, guard, Burnaby, BC)  chipped in with 12 points.

The Cascades were up 41-39 at the half. They outscored TRU 27-14 in the third quarter en route to their second victory.
Gillespie admits his team is a bit down after their first two outings. “Surely they are disappointed. But when you look at Fraser Valley---they did make the playoffs last year, they have a good group of players.  When you see seven players going into double figures, that makes them a quality basketball team.  I’m not disappointed with our effort. Certainly our youth and inexperience will mature as the season goes on.”

4 th year forward Jeff Friesen (Duncan, BC) led the way with 22 points. George Aramide (2nd year, forward, London UK) had 11 rebounds and 19 points. Drew Bleth (4 th year, guard, Ridgefield, Wash) had 16 points.

DOUBLE DRIBBLES: The Wolf Pack host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday October 31 st. Fans who come to the game dressed in costume get in for a reduced price.  The WolfPack will be giving everyone candy courtesy of Jill’s on Mcgill.  On Saturday (Nov 1), The University of Calgary Dinos come to town. The proceeds from the gate will go directly to the TRU United Way Campaign.
