For Immediate Release: March 7, 2009
Bremerton, Washington---It rained and rained, but the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Baseball team refused to go away. Playing their first games in 15 days, the WolfPack split their exhibition doubleheader with the Olympic Community College Rangers of the Northwest Community College Athletic Association.
After waiting 2 and a half hours to play due to the wet conditions, the WolfPack dropped the opener 10-5. The WolfPack scored their runs on nine hits while committing seven errors. Olympic had eight hits and committed one error.
Bryan Mahon (Trail, BC), returning to the TRU lineup after being hit in the shin in the teams final exhibition tilt in Arizona was tagged with the loss. Mahon, who could very well be the ace of the TRU staff come the start of the Canadian College Baseball Conference season, pitched the first three innings. He surrendered two hits, five runs--three of them earned, he struck out one and walked two.
Catcher/Outfielder Yoshi Nakamura (Yokohama, Japan) was 3 for 3 at the dish. He had a homer, a double and an RBI. Ben Bradford (Catcher/Outfielder, Kamloops, BC) was 1 for 4. He had a home run and an RBI. Shorstop Kyle Dhanani (Blaine, Wash) was 2 for 4.
TRU came back in the night cap and came away with a 5-3 victory. The WolfPack pounded out 10 hits and had three errors. The Rangers had eight hits and one error.
Jordan Broatch (White Rock, BC) notched the victory. The six foot right hander pitched six strong innings, giving up five hits, no runs, two walks and struck out four. Jordan Lane (RHP, Kamloops, BC) came on and got the save, striking out two in an inning of work.
Offensively, TRU was led by outfielder Matt Walker (Bowen Island, BC). Walker was 2 for 3 with a homer, a stolen base and an RBI. Dillon Morgan (1st base, Camp Verde, Arizona) was 2 for 3 with a stolen base. Dhanani was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Adam Halland (infielder, Kamloops, BC) was 2 for 5.
Says Head Coach Ray Chadwick: "A lack of defence was out demise once again. We committed seven errors in the first game and tried to give the night cap way by committing three more".
The WolfPack improve to 4 and 7 on the pre season. They have a doubleheader set against the Blaze in Langley Sunday (weather permitting) March 8. The first pitch goes at 1 pm.
TRU will play its first home games March 21 st against the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs and Kwantlen Polytechnic Eagles.
