Canada West Defers Membership Decisions

For release-May 6, 2009
Winnipeg, MB – During the 2009 Canada West Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Winnipeg from May 5-8, the Canada West membership has voted to postpone membership decisions affecting two current probationary members and three applying institutions until the 2010 Canada West AGM.
“Our Membership believes that it is in the best interest of both the association and the individual institutions that we further investigate what are challenging issues surrounding the management and potential future growth of Canada West,” said Canada West President Clint Hamilton.
Thompson Rivers University (TRU) and University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) are probationary members of Canada West. Both universities will continue to compete in the conference in 2009-10.
Thompson Rivers University was accepted as a probationary member of Canada West in 2005-06, competing in men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. TRU will host the CIS Men’s Volleyball Championship in March 2010.
The University of the Fraser Valley was accepted as a probationary member of Canada West in 2006-07, competing in men’s and women’s basketball and soccer.
The status of the three applying institutions – the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) and Vancouver Island University (VIU) – will be determined at the May 2010 Canada West AGM to be held in Victoria, BC.
President Hamilton concluded “This is an extremely important and complex issue for both our current members and institutions seeking membership in our association.”
