Clan defeat TRU in five sets

Burnaby , B.C. – The Simon Fraser University Clan women’s volleyball team outlasted the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday night, defeating TRU 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11) to win their first match of the season. With the victory, the Clan improve to 1-2 on the year, while the WolfPack fall to 0-1.
In the first set, Thompson Rivers held a slim 8-6 lead at the first break in play, which was whittled down to one point at the second break (16-15). TRU however pulled away near the end of the set, capitalizing on a pair of Clan attack errors and then blocking a Jennifer Northrup ( Surrey , B.C.) attack to win the set 25-20.
The Clan responded in the second set, taking an 8-7 lead at the first break in play and held a 16-14 lead following a Krystyna Adams (Richmond, B.C.) kill. Simon Fraser pulled away during the remainder of the set, with SFU playing tough at the net, registering three blocks over the final nine points to win the set 25-17.
Out of the gate, the third set was back and forth, tied at 8-8, and 20-20, however SFU rattled off five straight points to close out the set, including two service aces from Stephanie Senges (Surrey, B.C.) to win the set 25-20.
The WolfPack rebounded in the fourth set, holding an 8-6 advantage at the first break following a Lykke Degner (1st year, Copehagen, Denmark) kill, then extending their lead to 16-12 at the second break and finally closing out the set on a kill from Richelle Walton 25-19.
Forced to rebound, SFU trailed early in the fifth set 8-7, however strong net play by Sarah McNeil ( Prince George , B.C.) and Adams allowed the Clan to battle back, ultimately closing out the set 15-11 to win the match 3-2.
For the Clan, Northrup led SFU with 12 kills, while Senges had 35 set assists. Laura Mireault ( North Vancouver , B.C.) had a game high 24 digs.
For the WolfPack, Amanda Frayne(2nd year, Kamloops, BC) had a team high 14 kills, while Stine Christiansen(2nd year, Ribe, Denmark) had 36 set assists. Daniela Bercelli (4th year, Jundai, Brazil) led her team with 15 digs.
The two teams will rematch tomorrow night at 7 pm (Oct 25)
