PERRIN BECOMES FIRST EVER WOLFPACK PLAYER TO BE NAMED CIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Perrin congratulated by teammates
For Immediate Release-January 21, 2009

Kamloops—For the first time since the school went CIS, Thompson Rivers University has had a member of its WolfPack sports teams named Canadian Interuniversity Sport  Athlete of the Week.

Volleyball player Gord Perrin was chosen as the Male Athlete of the Week  for the period January 12-19.

“It’s a great honor for the school and for Gord,” says WolfPack Athletic Director Ken Olynyk.  “It’s nice that Gord’s hard work on the court has been rewarded.”

Perrin had an impressive weekend as the WolfPack swept a pair of matches from the Brandon University Bobcats.
Perrin, a second-year arts student from Creston, B.C., averaged over five kills per set as the WolfPack (7-5) swept a weekend doubleheader against No. 9 Brandon (6-6) - ranked seventh prior to the duels - to climb three positions to No. 6 in the CIS coaches poll. The 6-foot-6, 190-pound outside hitter kicked off the two-game series Friday night tallying a game-high 17 kills for only three errors in a straight-set win, and followed up with a match-high 19 kills along with three service aces and five digs in Saturday's four-set victory. Last year's Canada West rookie of the year and a member of the CIS All-Rookie team, Perrin is in the Top 5 in Canada West in kills, service aces and points.

Says WolfPack Men’s Volleyball Head Coach Pat Hennelly: “"Gord showed what a great player should in a tough match this past weekend. He went out against a higher ranked team and performed all weekend. He played very smart and intense and showed great poise for a player only in his second year. I am glad that the CIS recognized this and it is great for TRU and Kamloops to get this publicity. We knew when we recruited Gord he was the top recruit in the country, this is another affirmation of that. Gord is becoming a complete player, both offensively and defensively." “

Saint Mary's basketball player Mark McLaughlin, Sherbrooke track and field athlete Pierre Puyjalon and Ryerson basketball player Boris Bakovic were the other male nominees.

The WolfPack visit Trinity Western University for matches this weekend (Jan 23 and 24)
