Perrin becomes second WolfPack on CIS men's volleyball All Rookie Team
It's second time lucky for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. For the second year in a row, a member of the WolfPack Men's Volleyball Team was named to the All-Canadian Rookie Team. 18 year old outside hitter Gord Perrin, who was earlier named the Canada West Rookie of the Year, was chosen to the All-Canadian Team.
"It feels great to be put in the same category as these other people," stated the native of Creston BC. "I just want to go out and prove to everyone at Nationals that I deserve it".
Perrin, who played for Canada's Youth National team last year was 15th in scoring the Canada West.
"Gord had an exceptional season," says head coach Pat Hennelly. "It's not very many high school guys who can come into the Canada West and put up some of the numbers he did". Perrin had three games with double digit kills and a .500 efficiency. He also had double digit kills in six league games."
"I'll go back to the UBC game where, on the road against the number three team in the country, he puts up 21 kills and only makes three errors. Typically you see a rookie putting up big numbers but they don't typically get those low error totals. The fact he can do that against players that are three to five years older than him, is exceptional," Hennelly adds.
Perrin says his first year in the CIS was everything that he expected it to be.
"The thing I noticed coming from high school was that the serves were a lot harder and the returns a lot quicker. You have to keep your head in the game the entire time."
The only other Canada West players on the All Rookie team was setter Cairn McGovern (Grande Prairie Alta) of Calgary and middle Joe Cordonier (Vancouver BC) of UBC. The CIS Rookie of the year was Laval's Karl de Grandpre.
Ben Schellenberg of the University Of Winnipeg Wesmen was named CIS Player of the year. The other Canada West player garnering a major award was UBC's Blair Bann (Edmonton, Alta). He was named Libero of the year.
The WolfPack will have a two hour practice this evening as they gear up for their first match of the CIS Championship against the host Laval Rouge et Or on Friday night (Feb 29). Some 3 thousand people are expected to watch that match.
