Shannon Meyer named CCAA Soccer All Canadian
TRU WolfPack women's soccer midfielder Shannon Meyer (2nd-year, Westsyde, Kamloops) was named a Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) All Canadian at the National Soccer Championships Awards Banquet last night in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The All Canadians are selected by their individual conference based on his/her performance and contribution to both their sport and their team.
In the two years that Shannon has played with the WolfPack, the team has done extraordinarily well. Last year saw the WolfPack finish with a regular season 7-4-1 record and awarded both BCCAA and CCAA silver medals, eventually losing to Langara College in both tournament finals. This season, the WolfPack end the regular season with a record of 10-2-2 and are poised to make another run at Provincial and National medals, having posted 10 shutouts and only allowing 6 goals all season.
Shannon graduated from Westsyde Secondary in Kamloops in 2006 after leading her high school team to a bronze medal in the Provincial Championship in Williams Lake. Shannon played for the Penticton U – 21 team that won the PCSL league this past summer. Last fall, Shannon was named a CCAA Tournament All-Star as well as top goalkeeper of the Nationals hosted by Langara after replacing the ailing starting keeper for TRU. Shannon finished the 2007/2008 season tied for 8th with 5 goals.
"Shannon is a very strong, aggressive, physical defender who has been a major reason for the league best goals against average this season.", says head coach Eric Schweizer. "She is strong on throw-ins and in front of goal on corner balls, and loves to attack. Shannon is very vocal on the pitch, helping in directing and controlling plays."
"Shannon contributes offensively as a set play specialist and with creative plays out of the backfield by distributing balls to the attacking flank players. She also causes a lot of problems for defenders with her long throws and her work in front of the net off corners. Most importantly, she contributes defensively as she time in and time out thwarts the opponents attack with her aggressive play of the ball, especially in the air clearing balls out of danger."
