The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack will be well represented when the National Junior Mens Volleyball team holds its tryout camp at the end of the month. First year middle Stefan Savoie (Winnipeg Manitoba) and first year outside hitter Gord Perrin (Creston BC) were two of 18 players named to the tryout camp roster.
Both played with the National Youth team two years ago when they were in grade 11. In 2005-06, The Youth team finished fourth at the NORCECA Continental Championship. They were the only team to win a set from eventual champion Puerto Rico and lost to Cuba in the Bronze medal match.
This season with TRU, Perrin was the Canada West Rookie of the Year. He was also named to the CIS All Rookie team and was a tournament allstar at the CIS Championships this March in Laval Quebec. Savoie was one of the WolfPack’s key reserves in his rookie campaign.
“I think I’ve got a pretty good chance of sticking,” said Perrin from his home in Creston BC “It’s a different feeling representing your country. But its one that I enjoy and hope to do again this summer.”
“This is great recognition for our program,” says WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly “ Gord had a phenomenal first season. For Stef, he played a lot in exhibition and during the first half of the campaign. It’s a sign that both players are being rewarded for their hard work and it shows that our program is getting noticed Nationally.”
Reached at his home in Winnipeg, Savoie was very excited by the news. “I’ve had the chance to represent Canada before and I’m hoping I can again. My selection to the training camp roster tells me my hard work and dedication in practice is paying off’.
Canada Coach Chris Green, who is an assistant with the Senior mens team when not directing this program, plans to carry 12 starters and 2 reserves. This is Greens second tour of duty as head coach of Canada’s National Junior Team. The training camp is set for Winnipeg May 25-28 th. The team will fly to El Salvador to play in the 2008 NORCECA Junior Mens Continental Championship in late June.
