Why Choose TRU
Over the past 35 years, TRU has established an outstanding reputation of excellence in education, built on qualities such as accessibility, choice, flexibility and personal attention. These attributes have remained as cornerstones when UCC became Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in April 2005, a brand-new post-secondary institution that continues its diversity of academic, technical and trades programming while incorporating the province's best on-line learning resources as exemplified by the BC Open University, making TRU the most innovative and comprehensive university in Canada.
With the addition of the distance education and open learning components of the BC Open University, TRU is literally able to offer every high school graduate or adult learner the opportunity to become an outstanding and successful university graduate.
Located on a spectacular campus in the heart of the city of Kamloops, Thompson Rivers University also features many new and outstanding student facilities, including the brand new International Centre that opened in January 2005, and there's much more to come. An estimated $100 million in new construction is slated for the campus over the next four years, including new student housing, a new library/learning commons, classrooms, offices and new athletic facilities.
Why Choose TRU Athletics
The Athletics and Recreation Department offers an intercollegiate program that is designed to allow the more serious athlete the opportunity to participate against athletes from other universities, colleges and post-secondary institutions.
TRU is situated on a spectacular 100-hectare campus ideally located within a vibrant, safe, smaller interior city.
It offers outstanding athletic facilities, including an international-size court, weight room, squash and racquetball courts and table sports in the gymnasium, plus a running track, full track & field facilities and a 50-metre indoor pool with a sauna, hot tub, indoor water slide and recreation.
The campus is also readily accessible to all-season recreation and enhanced lifestyles, including some of the best skiing, mountain biking, hiking and water sports terrain in the province. The WolfPack Soccer and Volleyball teams play in a state of the art "Tournament Capital Center" located on the TRU Campus. The T.C.C. has a seating capacity of 22 hundred. Our soccer teams play at Hillside Stadium, an artificial turf field which seats 1,060 people. All of our athletes have the use of the Tournament Capital Center which includes up to date workout rooms, an indoor track and a three meter swimming pool.
As of September 2005, TRU became a member in the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sports), competing in the Canada West Conference in men's and women's basketball and volleyball. In addition to basketball and volleyball, other intercollegiate sports for men and women include soccer, badminton, and baseball (men only). If you are interested in trying out for a team, you are invited to contact any one of the Athletic staff in the gymnasium. To be eligible for team participation you must be registered in a minimum of nine credits per semester or equivalent.
