Langley—“We came out with a lot of intensity and it showed.” That’s how the head coach of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack, Pat Hennelly described his teams comeback victory over Trinity Western Spartans in Canada West action Saturday (Jan 24). The WolfPack won three games to 1. The scores were 25-23,25-20,20-25,25-22.
“I have to give the credit to the guys,” says Hennelly . “They really wanted to come out and make amends for what happened on Friday. We got out to a good jump in the first two sets. I have to give credit to Trinity for fighting hard against us. “
Hennelly thought the turning point of the match came in the fourth set when outside hitter Behlul Yavasgel (4 th year, Aydin, Turkey) came up with a key block. “ After that, our guys really rallied. We had strong performance from both Gord (Perrin, 2nd year, outside hitter, Creston, BC) and Robin (Schoebel, 3rd year, outside hitter, Monaco). “
Perrin, the CIS player of the week had 20 kills on 44 attemps. He also had two service aces. Schoebel had 18 kills on 36 attempts with five errors. He had 12 digs to lead the WolfPack.
“Our guys really focused tonite,” stated Hennelly .
Colin Jaggard (4 th year, setter, Calgary, Alta) had three service aces for the number 6 ranked WolfPack.
Trinity was led by Aaron Vandebrink (Langley, BC) who had 14 kills. Marc Howatson had 11 kills.
The WolfPack are now 10 and 6 in league play while Trinity falls to 8 and 6.
TRU closes out the regular season next weekend (Jan 29 and 30) against the Dinos in Calgary. “ It’ll be a battle for 2nd place,”says Hennelly. “ We have a lot of respect for that team. Despite them being swept by Brandon this weekend, Calgary is one of the hottest teams in CIS Volleyball right now. They have a great program.”
