TRU CHORUS

January, 2006

Welcome to a new year, to new music, and to new members. I'm looking forward to a great year, with some interesting music and a lot of fun!

I am looking (as always) for more Altos, Tenors, and Basses. Please encourage your friends, relatives, etc. to consider joining us.

REHEARSALS

Attendance at all rehearsals is essential. Attendance will be taken both through a sign-in sheet, and through spot checks by the conductor. Students that sign-in for absent students may be subject to discipline by TRU. If for any reason you are unable to attend a rehearsal, you must contact the conductor. We understand that occasionally there may be personal reasons for missing a rehearsal, but the general rule is if you are well enough to attend work or school during the day, then you are well enough to attend the rehearsal. Here are some other guidelines to make our rehearsals work smoothly:

  • Tuesday nights 6:30pm to 9:20pm (please arrive 10 minutes early ) CT 200 (Alumni Theatre)
  • Please turn off your cell phone during rehearsal (and performances!)
  • This group is a scent-considerate group. Therefore, please DO NOT wear perfumes, scented hair products, or scented deodorant as this can be uncomfortable when we are all breathing deeply in close quarters.
  • There will be a break during the rehearsal. Please return promptly after the break. If you need to leave at the break, please inform the conductor (attendance spot checks after the break may be taken).
  • Only water is permitted in the theatre. You are encouraged to bring some, as rehearsals are long, and it's important to keep your voice hydrated.
  • Please bring a pencil (not a pen). Please USE your pencil to mark your music. Professional musicians tend to use their pencils more than amateurs. This isn't because they make more mistakes, it's because they can only afford to make a mistake ONCE!

MUSIC

Music has been ordered for this semester. Everyone is expected to have their own copy of "Opera Choruses" (edited by John Rutter). This is available at the TRU bookstore. The other selections will be provided at cost. Each member must pay $15 for this music (you do get to keep it!). Please put your name on your music to make sure it doesn't get lost.

You are responsible for practicing your music between rehearsals. This is essential for us to progress as a choir, and to be properly prepared for our performances. Practicing is the "studying" for students enrolled in the course, and just like studying for any other course, it's best to spread it out rather than "cramming" at the last minute. Practice CDs for some pieces may be available.

The use of photocopied copyright music is prohibited, so please don't make copies of your music. We obtain the rights to photocopy some music. If you need an extra copy of these pieces, please let me know. All sheet music must be kept in a black binder. Please label your binder inside (or discreetly on the outside) as all black binders tend to look alike!

CONCERTS

Concert schedules will be announced well in advance during rehearsal and (hopefully) on the chorus website. There will be extra rehearsals during the week prior to the performance. Typically, these are on the Friday evening and Saturday afternoon prior to a performance. It is your responsibility to inform the director if you are unable to attend a rehearsal or performance. Failure to do so could result in removal from the chorus or a failing grade for the course. Extra rehearsals will be announced in class and will be posted on the Chorus website.

Concert dress is all black. To create a professional look, we ask that you limit the amount of exposed skin (eg: no bare shoulders, backs, midriffs, or low necklines).

The tentative dates for performances are as follows (times TBA):
TRU Foundation Gala performance - Saturday, February 11
Kamloops Symphony Orchestra - Sagebrush Theatre - Saturday, March 11
TRU Chorus concert - "Bel Canto Italiano" - Friday, March 31 (tentative)

Office hours:

I will be available from 5:30pm to 6:15pm on Tuesdays at my office in the Alumni Theatre "Green Room" CT 125. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please contact me. Email is preferable (jchurchley@tru.ca) or you can leave a voice mail at 371-5947. However, I'm only on campus on late Tuesday afternoons so I don't check the voice mail very often.
