Geography
Geography has been part of the curriculum since the founding of Cariboo College in 1971. Third and fourth year courses date to 1989 and the establishment of the degree granting University College of the Cariboo. The geography major program began in 1997 with the first geography major students graduating in May 1998. Students may also minor or concentrate in geography at TRU.
TRU geography graduates are successfully employed as planners, teachers, consultants, economic development specialists, communication officers, real estate agents, and GIS technicians. The TRU geography program also provides students with a solid foundation for pursuing graduate studies. We annually award up to 8 scholarships and support 2 work study students. Our students have published in scholarly journals and won entrance awards to graduate programs at other institutions.
There are currently 6 faculty, 2 lab faculty, and several part-time instructors. According to the recent external review, the geography faculty are known for their commitment to teaching and to the community. The department is currently expanding its offerings in physical and cultural geography and is developing an research focus on the geography of small cities and their environmental contexts. There is a strong local research agenda, as well as established teaching and research projects in distant regions of Canada and foreign countries (notably the far North, Japan, Mexico, and northern Europe).
Geography faculty offices and classrooms are located in the Arts and Education building on TRU's main campus in Kamloops, British Columbia.
