Brief Description of Course:
- Examine both physical and human geography of Japan
- Focus on human interaction with the natural environment
- Natural hazards – volcanoes
- Different farming systems, e.g., rice, tea plantations, mandarin oranges
- Land-use planning challenges, e.g., sprawl on farmland, land reclamation in the ocean in Tokyo
- Structure of small and large cities
- Social planning problems, e.g., homelessness in Tokyo
Where will we go?
- meet at the Narita airport on the Kanto Plain where Tokyo is located
- west over the mountains of Honshu Island to the Sea of Japan
- back over the Japan Alps to the Kyoto area of eastern Japan
- the Hiroshima area to see the atomic bomb museum
- back to the centre of Tokyo – formal end of field course
Who can take this course?
- Student with third year university standing
- Geography 119, 120 or 390-Japan is recommended
- Must fill out a course application form and meet with the instructor for an interview before being allowed to take the course
Schedule:
- Preliminary meetings in late April and early May
- Pre-departure quiz
- Field course will tentatively run in the second half of May 2008.
- 16 day itinerary in Japan.
- Field component starts and finishes in Japan
Evaluation:
- Quizzes
- Presentation on a place in Japan
- Field journal
- Research paper upon return to Canada
Costs:
- Program fee: approximately $1600
- Airfare: approximately $1100 (Vancouver – Tokyo return
- Tuition for a 3 credit course
