Brief Description of Course:
  • Examine both physical and human geography of Japan
  • Focus on human interaction with the natural environment
  • Natural hazards – volcanoes
  • Different farming systems, e.g., rice, tea plantations, mandarin oranges
  • Land-use planning challenges, e.g., sprawl on farmland, land reclamation in the ocean in Tokyo
  • Structure of small and large cities
  • Social planning problems, e.g., homelessness in Tokyo
Where will we go?
  • meet at the Narita airport on the Kanto Plain where Tokyo is located
  • west over the mountains of Honshu Island to the Sea of Japan
  • back over the Japan Alps to the Kyoto area of eastern Japan
  • the Hiroshima area to see the atomic bomb museum
  • back to the centre of Tokyo – formal end of field course

Who can take this course?

  • Student with third year university standing
  • Geography 119, 120 or 390-Japan is recommended
  • Must fill out a course application form and meet with the instructor for an interview before being allowed to take the course

Schedule:

  • Preliminary meetings in late April and early May
  • Pre-departure quiz
  • Field course will tentatively run in the second half of May 2008.
  • 16 day itinerary in Japan.
  • Field component starts and finishes in Japan

Evaluation:

  • Quizzes
  • Presentation on a place in Japan
  • Field journal
  • Research paper upon return to Canada
Costs: 
  • Program fee: approximately $1600
  • Airfare: approximately $1100 (Vancouver – Tokyo return 
  • Tuition for a 3 credit course
