CUEF Scholarship & Service Learning

Comprehensive University Enhancement Fund (CUEF) Research Scholarships

The CUEF is a unique opportunity to directly fund undergraduate student research in any field. English and Modern Languages will work with outstanding students to develop research projects designed to enhance learning. The focus is on student research learning, not on the faculty project (though one may facilitate the other). There is a maximum of $5,000 available for each Student Research Scholarship. Up to 20 of these scholarships are distributed per year, with two intake periods:

  • September call, mid-October deadline for Fall/Winter semester
  • February call, mid-March due date for Summer semester

The application comes from the student, but is developed in close consultation with a faculty supervisor. This process may be driven in a number of ways: for example, a student with an interesting project idea may approach a potential supervisor; or a faculty member with a project might locate a suitable, interested student. The project should be of suitable length to fit within a 12- week period, and must result in specific learning outcomes (normally a public presentation or exhibition, a co-authored article, a report). If the research work is a portion of a faculty member’s larger project, care must be taken to ensure that it stands alone to some degree.

How to Apply:

  • Faculty member identifies a student / student approaches a potential supervisor
  • Develop a project proposal in consultation with faculty supervisor (500 words)
  • Complete ethical review if required (faculty supervisor will help here)
  • Complete a budget (80% or more goes to the student directly)
  • Faculty member completes a course outline: For the duration of the scholarship the student is registered in a research-learning course
  • Faculty member completes an RESL Course Approval form; faculty member writes a recommendation; student submits a transcript
  • Chair and Dean sign, and all documentation is submitted to the AVP Research Office

Service Learning

Service Learning 300 and 400 provide English and Modern Languages students (both individuals and cohorts of up to five students) with faculty supervised opportunities for civic participation and community involvement. EML faculty have supervised dozens of students, involving them in such activities as orienting International and Exchange students to Canadian culture, tutoring in the TRU Writing Centre, helping organize an international workshop and the school district’s Young Authors Conference, and working in various capacities with local arts organizations. Service Learning carries elective credit: third- and fourth-year students may take count up to six credits of Service Learning toward their degrees; with departmental approval, Service Learning courses that are directly related to the student’s program of study may be used to satisfy Majors requirements.

The Micheline Pellerin Scholarship Award

Micheline Pellerin was an instructor of French at UCC from 1989 to 2000. She was known for her good humour and strong concern for students and the languages program, which she coordinated for several years. Before coming to UCC, she taught at SFU, where she earned an M.A. in Applied Linguistics. Micheline was also an avid musician, playing recorder and guitar. She participated in various musical groups, including singing in the UCC Chorus.

The Micheline Pellerin Scholarship award seeks to keep the memory of Micheline alive by promoting the goal to which she dedicated her life: helping her students learn well. Each year, the top two language students receive a $250 award, with the winners being chosen on a rotational basis from two of each of the languages offered at UCC.
