Thematic Option

The Thematic Option in Canadian Studies provides a wide range of disciplinary perspectives on salient regional and national issues. This program will be of interest to those students interested in pursuing careers in education, government service, communications, library science, law and other fields where an understanding of Canadian society and culture is essential.

Students must complete the core course requirement in the area of the Thematic Study, plus a minimum of 42 credits from a list of designated content courses for the Thematic Study. At least 30 of these credits must be in 300-400 level courses.

Please note that first- and second-year Canadian content courses do not necessarily fulfill prerequisite requirements for courses in the third- and fourth-year Canadian content course list. For all prerequisite information, consult the calendar.

Associate Degree

To attain a specilized Canadian Studies  Associate of Arts Degree requires the completion of a 18 Canadian Studies credits.

6 credits of first year English 110/111 or 111/121
6 credits in Humanities (other than English)
This may be Canadian content courses as specified in Canadian Studies in the Calendar
6 credits in Social Science
This may be Canadian content courses as specified in Canadian Studies in the Calendar
6 credits in Arts electives at 100 or 200 level
18 credits in Canadian Studies (CNST 200 is a required course)
Other course areas are specified in Canadian Studies in the Calendar and in the attached brochure
9 credits

in Science
3 credits in Math or Statistics or Computing Science
3 credits in a Lab Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physical Geography, Geology, Physics)
3 additional credits in Science or Lab Science

9 credits  of first or second year courses:
(These courses may be outside the Arts and Sciences)
