CSC and the Community
Canadian Studies students and faculty had a strong presense in the campus
community, Kamloops community, and globally (See “TRU and Beyond”)
On the Town
TRU’s Campus Activity Centre was the venue for the joint fundraiser of the
Kamloops Symphony, Kamloops Art Gallery and Western Canada Theatre. Both
students and faculty volunteered their time and energy to contribute to what
was a highly successful, fun-filled, flashback into the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Canadian Studies student Lisa Longo and Canadian Studies faculty members
Ginny Ratsoy and Martin Whittles strutted their stuff down the runway in the
Flashback Fashion show, which was organized by CNST student Jennifer Jones.
The evening celebrated thirty years of arts in the Kamloops community.
“Discover the Difference”: Student Orientation Week at TRU
Service Learning student Ashley Blackburn, who is a member of the TRU
Orientation committee, assisted in the coordination of the Spring Break
conference for high school students that took place March 13 to 17. Students
were introduced to life on campus and to a variety of disciplines such as
Journalism, Canadian Studies, and English.
Student Research at Local Arts Organization
Jennifer Jones and Lisa Longo, two of Ginny Ratsoy’s Service Learning
Students, worked two semesters at the local professional theatre company,
Western Canada Theatre. They sorted through forty years of archives and
further developed the history section on the company’s website.

Anne Gagnon and the Community
In addition to her instruction at TRU, Anne teaches classes of twenty adult
students at the Henry Grube Centre. Students of the Kamloops Adult Learners
Society are taught a variety of History classes including Quebec history,
women’s history, and pre-confederation.
Ginny Ratsoy, Jim Hoffman, and Western Canada Theatre
Both Hoffman and Ratsoy continue to write the program notes for each
Western Canada Theatre mainstage play. These notes provide a preliminary
commentary for reading either before or after the production.
