TRU Actors Workshop Theatre
It’s been a long, hard road finding a home for the TRU Actors Workshop. Cariboo College’s old boardroom hosted the initial Actor’s Workshop production in 1985. A year later, Westsyde Secondary School was utilized; next, the Student Lounge in the college cafeteria; then, 2 shows at Western Canada Theatre’s Pavilion theatre.
Finally in 1990, UCCAW moved into the newly constructed Clocktower Theatre (later known as the Alumni Theatre) where acting classes also transpired. This proscenium venue was theatre ‘headquarters’ for twelve years over twenty-four productions. Following ceaseless research and logistical planning, in addition to financial commitment from the provincial government, construction for the new theatre venue began in the fall of 2002. The new venue is now home to acting, technical and directing courses, in addition to the UCCAW’s main stage.
Performances are staged in this state-of-the-art theatre, designed to be totally adaptable for any kind of staging, from traditional proscenium through thrust, theatre in the round, and even environmental staging. The theatre space, complete with box office, shop, rehearsal hall, and costume room. It’s infinitely adaptable for instruction and a great production space.
The theatre will also enable an expanded production schedule. Instead of the program’s traditional one-play-per-semester, there will be three main stage productions during the university year, plus a director’s festival in the spring, and a summer production as well.
