Admission Requirements for BSc/BCS
B.Sc. Admission Requirements
Students can enter the B.Sc program after completion of 48 credits with a minumum gpa of 2.0. Currently students enter the B.Sc. program at TRU at the end of the second year of study. For all science courses the minimum acceptable grade for pre-requisite courses is a C. For all B.Sc. programs, no matter what the major, the following first and second year courses are required:
- 6 credits of Calculus (MATH 113/123 or 114/124)
- 3 credits of Chemistry (CHEM 110 or 111)
- 3 credits of Physics (PHYS 110 or 115)
- 3 credits of Biology or Geology (BIOL 110 or 111 or 120 or 121 or GEOL 111 or 205)
- 3-6 credits of first year English (ENGL 110 or 111 or 121 - if a grade of B or better is obtained in the first English course, a second first year English course is not required)
- 3 credits of second year English (ENGL 229 or 230)
The following additional specific courses are required for entry to the B.Sc. with a Major in Computing Science:
- 6 credits of 1st year Computing Science (COMP 113/123)
- 6 credits of 2nd year Computing Science (COMP 213/223)
- 6 credits of Mathematics ( MATH 212 - Linear Algebra, MATH 222 - Discrete Mathematics (COMP 220 is equivalent to MATH 222))
- 3 credits of Statistics (Stat 200 - Introduction to Statistics)
Additionally, 18-21 credits of electives are required (depending on whether 3 or 6 credits of first year English were required).
For students wishing to transfer in from other institutions within B.C., the B.C. Transfer Guide will be used to determine course equivalencies. Again, a minimum gpa of 2.0, with a minimum grade of C in pre-requisite courses, will be required. The Bachelor of Science Program has considerable experience with students transferring in from other institutions. For students transferring in from outside of B.C. the appropriate transfer guides will be utilized.
All first and second year academic courses at TRU are either already articulated with all other institutions in B.C., or are in the process of articulation if they have only recently been introduced. It is not common for institutions to articulate courses at the third or fourth year level. However, TRU will certainly accept for credit, 300 or 400 level courses that have been completed at other B.C. institutions, if the courses are compatible with the program, and fit within the scope of a maximum transfer of 50% credits.
A number of students in the B.Sc. Program have requested, and been granted, credit for courses completed outside of the B.C. public post-secondary system. Credit can be granted in a number of ways:
- There are formal transfer credit agreements between the major universities in each province, and TRU utilizes the data bases available for this transfer.
- If there are no transfer agreements in place, faculty will review course outlines and where possible, examples of examinations, from other institutions to determine appropriate transfer credit.
- Currently a number of private post-secondary institutions are seeking transfer agreements, and TRU welcomes this development.
- The B.Sc. program is currently developing block transfer arrangements with institutions outside of B.C.
- TRU has introduced a policy on Prior learning Assessment, and although the B.Sc. program has, as yet, not received any applications to apply PLA, the field of computing science would be a strong contender for use of this process.
- The B.Sc. program is currently developing a laddering arrangement for graduates of the TRU Respiratory Therapy and Medical Laboratory Technology programs. The arrangement will grant block transfer (to a maximum of 60 credits) for successful completion of the programs and identify the specific courses required to complete each of the current majors available at TRU. The B.Sc. committee will consider applications for block transfer from graduates of other technology programs, but each program will be dealt with on a program specific basis. Graduates of technology programs wishing to ladder into the B.Sc. with a Major in Computing Science would be dealt with in the same manner. Although this item deals with credits achieved within the B.C. public post-secondary system, it is a novel approach for a B.Sc. program, and can be equally applied to graduates of technology programs from outside of B.C.
For first year entry the admission requirement is High School graduation.
For third year entry, the admission requirement is 60 credits of study at a post secondary institution.
Three categories of entry are possible:

To qualify for third year entry into the BCS Degree Program
It is anticipated that not all students seeking third year entry will meet all of the first and second year requirements. Course deficiencies must be covered prior to admittance to third year. This can be done through a number of mechanisms including:
- Completion of missing courses
- Demonstration of desired outcomes via Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)
- Course Challenge
Until deficient areas are completed, students will be provisionally enrolled in third year.
Articulation Arrangements with Other Programs
TRU's 2 year CSOM diploma program, and most other 2 year IT diploma programs, are fully transferable to BCS. Most other post secondary programs are transferable to BCS.
