Transfer Credit

Have you completed courses at another post-secondary institution and want to get credit for this work at TRU?  Have you begun your classes at TRU and plan to complete your education elsewhere?  Below are typical questions students often ask about Transfer Credit.

What is TRU's process for accepting transfer credit from within British Columbia?  or from another province?

If you are transferring to TRU from elsewhere in Canada, you must:

  • apply for admission to TRU (online applications accepted through ApplyBC )
  • provide TRU with official transcripts from all institutions you have attended, including your High School transcripts
  • provide course outlines, if requested
  • Admissions will formally assess your application and transfer credits to TRU.

NOTE:   Transfer credit assessment is NOT dependent upon an individual's program.  TRU has a wide range of program offerings and the requirements for each do differ.

If you have questions, please contact the Admissions Office or the Academic Advising Office for clarification about your transfer credits.

What is TRU's process for accepting transfer credit from outside Canada?

The process for a student who has coursework from another country, is the same as above.  The TRU Admissions office will assess transcripts and grant transfer credit for courses which are acceptable to TRU.

If you have a Degree from another country, you will need to:

  • Contact the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES) for an official assessment and translation of your transcripts.
  • Apply to TRU.
  • Provide an official copy of the assessment and translation done through ICES
  • Submit an original copy of your transcripts

NOTE:  Transfer credit assessment is NOT dependent upon an individual's program.  If you change programs, you can expect your transfer credits to change.  TRU has a wide range of program offerings and the requirements for each do differ.

If you have questions, please contact the Admissions Office or the Academic Advising Office for clarification about your transfer credits.

How do I know which courses transfer and which institutions will accept transfer credit?

Whether you are transferring to TRU from elsewhere or transferring from TRU to attend another post-secondary institution, you need to check to see if the coursework you have done will be accepted.

Formal agreements between the British Columbia Post-Secondary Institutions are in place, to facilitate students in wishing to transfer credits between institutions within the province.  To determine whether your courses transfer to TRU, visit the BC College of Admissions and Transfer website.  This easy to use online transfer guide will show exactly which of your courses transfer within the B.C. system - www.bctransferguide.ca

Is transfer credit recognized outside of British Columbia?

The B.C. College of Admissions Transfer and the BC Educational Institutions articulate courses, so students can make a smooth transition from one institution to another.  These articulation agreements only exist within B.C.  If you are wanting to transfer outside of the province, there is no guarantee that the new institution will accept your credits.  To help yourself do the following:

  • Apply to the institution of your choice
  • Provide official transcripts from all institutions you have attended
  • Keep all course outlines you would have received from your instructors, in case the new institution requires more information on the courses you have completed
  • Submitting course outlines can be of help to you if you find that some of your credits are not accepted.  The outlines provide more detailed information, and institutions may then re-assess your credits, allowing for more transfer credit
  • The 'rule of thumb' is if a course is accepted by UBC, it is likely that the institutions outside B.C. will allow for transfer credit as well
