 Current and Admitted Students

While Academic Advising is not mandatory for Canadian Students, it is strongly recommended.  Accurate and up-to-date advising can relieve you of the stress related to choosing an incorrect course, while saving you time and money.  This is true whether you are an Academic student in 1st or 2nd year, or in a Career or Trades Programs or in University Preparation program.

What is an Academic Advisor ?

Advisors assist both current students and prospective students with planning courses for first and second year university, as well as for all career, technology, trades and University Preparation programs.

Advisors liaise with many other departments at TRU, and provide students with better access to other services by referring them directly. They answer questions regarding TRU Policy on academic performance, withdrawal and appeal procedures.

Advisors provide information about programs relevant to students' educational and career goals at other post-secondary institutions.  The Advising Resource Centre offers a collection of calendars and other useful information to students.

Advising, as opposed to Counselling. Are we the same as Counsellors?

No. Counsellors at TRU have a much different role. The Counselling Centre provides a variety of personal and career services.  It can be confusing but a good rule of thumb is:
  • Advisors talk to Students about Specific Program Information ... like course and program requirements, they provide students help with application and admission processes. Don't be fooled by the title "Academic Advisor".  Advisors assist all TRU students, whether they are interested in career, trades, academic or university preparation programs.
  • Counsellors assist in Personal Counselling ... helping to determine career goals and objectives, or assisting students with personal problems that may affect scholastic performance or social well-being. Counsellors also help students with issues related to success in post-secondary education, from stress management to techniques for becoming a better student. Visit the Counselling Centre (Room OM1631) in the Old Main Building, or phone (250) 828-5023.
