Tips for an Effective Advising Appointment

During most times of the year, demand for academic advising is extremely heavy, and appointments are often booked weeks in advance. To accommodate as many students as possible, appointment times are limited to half an hour. In order to maximize the time spent in your appointment, you should complete the following steps before your appointment:

  1. If you are a new student to TRU look online for the Step One and Step Two Tutorials.  These tutorials are designed to orient you to programs, procedures and literature you will encounter as a TRU student, as well as finding out what it will be like to be a student at TRU.  Click onto Prospective Students for other useful information.
  2. Preview a Degree Advising Tutorial to learn about the requirements associated with your degree.  You can look at the online information for all degree programs offered at TRU at any time.  More information at Current Students.
  3. First-time student?   Look online for the Timetabling and Registration Tutorials designed to assist you with the registration and timetabling process, with additional information about using myTRU.
  4. Read the TRU Calendar. You will find the answers to most of your questions regarding program requirements, grades, fees, and timelines in this book.
  5. Planning on transferring to another institution?  Read the Calendar or visit the website of the institution you are planning to transfer to, concentrating on program information, prerequisites and application deadlines.  Check to see whether your courses are transferable via the British Columbia Online Transfer Guide.  www.bctransferguide.ca
  6. Come prepared with a list of questions and/or concerns that you would like addressed during your appointment. Don't forget - There are no stupid questions! We'll try our best to assist you as much as possible.  Bring your latest High School transcripts, as well as any other Post-Secondary transcript you may have.
