Thompson Rivers University Self Guided Tour

(This tour is meant for those of you visiting our Kamloops campus - either print out this information and take it with you on the walking tour, or access it through your cell phone browser and read it as you go!)

TRU Campus Self Guided Tour 

1 Clocktower (CT)

The Clocktower is primarily used for administration though there are faculty offices for the School of Tourism and the School of Nursing. Also, on the first floor, there is one of two Journalism labs on campus. The Alumni Theatre is a lecture hall that can accommodate a large number of people.

Walk across the road to the entrance corresponding to number 2 on the map.

2 Old Main (OM) – Entrance

Old Main is the original building on campus. Look to your right: across the road, you will see blue-roofed buildings; these are one option for student residence, Upper College Heights. You will also notice the shops close by; grocery stores, restaurants and shopping areas.

Once you have entered the building, turn left and walk down the hallway.

3 Old Main (OM) – Hallway

Lockers are available for rent through the campus cashier.

The Math Lab (OM1781) is staffed by upper-level math students and faculty and is available to students with any math related questions.

The Writing Lab is located on the 2 nd floor (OM 2674) and is available to assist students with formatting, grammar and proofreading.

The Student Employment Centre and Co-operative Education Department assists students seeking employment on and off campus and also is home to Co-op programs.

Counselling & Disability Services (OM 1651) provides confi dential personal, crisis and career counselling and services for students with documented disabilities.

Financial Aid & Awards (OM 1641) advises students on processes for scholarships and student loans and can also provide assistance with financial budgeting.

The Campus Cashier (OM 1614) is where you can pay any fees; it’s also where you pick up your Student ID card .

4 Old Main (OM)–Student Street

At the “T” intersection, look to your right.

At the Health Services clinic , doctors are available Monday to Friday.

Turn to your left and walk down the hall.

Peer Support (OM 1421) is a student volunteer group trained to listen to students in a nonjudgemental and confidential manner.

The Computer Labs in Old Main (OM 1326) are the largest on campus, with over 40 labs located in various locations. Students are able to use the open labs 24-hours a day during the school year. Printing is also free; just bring your own paper. The Lab Support window provides you with your wireless, Novell account and TRU email address.

Once you leave the computer labs, look to your right for the Printshop.

The Printshop (OM 1206) offers specialty printing services, binding, colour copying and also printing paper available to buy.

Turn to your left and walk back to the T-intersection and then turn left onto Student Street.

International Admissions (OM 1412) assists International students with enrolment.

The Admissions & Registrars Office (OM 1155) assists students with adding/dropping classes and processes requests for transcripts.

In Student Street, have a look around you.

The Student Art Gallery , to the left of the staircase, is for Bachelor of Fine Arts students to display their artwork throughout the year.

The Actors Workshop Theatre , to the right of Montague’s Deli, is a black-box style theatre; Theatre student’s stage 6–10 plays a year.

Tim Hortons/Montagues Deli offers everything from coffee to fresh made sandwiches and soups.

Academic Advising assists students in choosing their courses and ensures students have sufficient credits to continue to the next year.

The Security Office is available 24 hours a day.

Walk out the doors and follow the path to the left of the ‘Convocation Wall’.

5 Walk between Old Main & the International Building

The Convocation Wall was built to commemorate the transition from the University College of the Cariboo (UCC) to Thompson Rivers University in 2005.

Also along the path, you will notice plaques representing our Solar System.

The Observatory on top of the International Building is used by the Astronomy and Physics departments.

6 International Building (IB)

TRU welcomes almost 1100 International students from 70 different counties and on the 3 rd floor, TRU World offers International student support and Study Abroad programs. This building is home to the School of Business and Economics. On the 2 nd floor, there are two computer labs and study space available.

7 Arts & Education (AE)

This building is home to the Bachelor of Arts, Social Work and Education programs. On the 2 nd floor, there is a Language Lab and the Arts Advising office for those students entering their 3 rd year.

At the end of the Arts and Education building, turn right and follow the path to the glass building and enter.

8 Independent Centre (Indy Centre)

The Independent Centre is run by TRU’s Student Union (TRUSU) . The large space is used for events and concerts throughout the year. The office is where you pick up your U-Pass once you have your student card. The Health Benefits office is also located here and if you are already covered under a medical plan, you can option out before mid-September and receive a refund.

Continue through the doors and follow the curved hallway into the rotunda of the Campus Activity Centre.

The TRUE Balance Massage Clinic is a privately run clinic available to students by appointment.

9 Campus Activity Centre (CAC)

The TRU Bookstore is the campus bookstore and sells new and used textbooks and other supplies.

Continue up the stairs and turn to your left.

There are no classrooms in the CAC, although there is plenty of space available for reading or studying.

The Terrace Cafeteria is where many students eat their lunch; it is also attached to the Food Court , where students can buy a variety of food.

Heroes Pub is open for lunch and dinner and throughout the year has a variety of events and concerts.

The Grand Hall is a large conference area and is used for a number of university and community events.

Continue up the stairs to the 3rd floor and exit onto the patio.

10 Outside the Campus Activity Centre

CFBX (The X) 92.5 FM is campus and community radio station that hosts a variety of programming and are always looking for volunteers.

Student Recruitment and Liaison is the Welcome Centre for future TRU students and their families as well as other school and community groups visiting campus.

The Horticulture house is home to the horticulture certificate and diploma programs and students maintain the garden; one of the largest botanical collections in BC.

The TRU Residence & Conference Centre is the tallest building in Kamloops at 11 stories and provides housing for almost 600 students.

Walk down the stairs and turn to your left and continue along the sidewalk towards the roundabout.

11 Trades & Technology Centre (TT)

The Trades and Technology Centre is the location for TRU’s Foundation trades training and TRU is the only university in Canada to offer a degree in Trades designed specifi cally for trades people.

The Animal Health Technology (AHT) building is located behind the Trades building.

Across from the Trades building is the South Kamloops Bus Exchange where most of the city’s buses will come.

Following the sidewalk, take your first left onto the cement pathway adjacent to the road.

12 House of Learning

Notice the cleared area on your left hand side. This will be the future site of the new House of Learning , which will include a space for Aboriginal services, a Learning Commons Area and electronic library resources. Target Completion–2010.

13 Houses

These houses were Officers Quarters when the campus was a Canadian Naval base in the mid 1900’s.

The Omega Student Newspaper is operated by students and distributes 1500 copies every Wednesday. The Omega is always looking for contributors from all disciplines.

Cariboo Childcare is for children of students and staff and is also where students in the Early Childhood Education program get hands on experience.

The Gathering Place is a resource centre for Aboriginal students; includes a transition coordinator and elders plus a place for students to feel at home.

The Research building is where students and faculty from many disciplines conduct research.

14 BC Centre for Open Learning (BCCOL)

BCCOLThis is the newest building on campus and opened in May 2007. It houses the support staff for TRU Open Learning. the online and distance education division of TRU. Many students take some distance courses, creating more flexibility in their schedule.

Follow the sidewalk up the hill and stop at the first left.

15 Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) and McGill Residence

Notice the large TCC facilities on the right and McGill residence on your left.

The Tournament Capital Centre includes an indoor track and gymnasium, Olympic-sized swimming pool, and a 3000 sq. ft. fitness facility. Also, there is a FIFA certified soccer pitch. Students have free access to the Canada Games pool with their U-Pass and unlimited use of the track and gym for $25/month.

TRU Wolfpack games are held in the TCC. Feel free to go up and check it out!

McGill Residence houses 300 students.

Continue down the road and steps to the front of the gymnasium.

16 Gymnasium (G)

This facility is used by athletics and intramural sports teams. There are squash and racquetball courts and changing facilities available to students.

17 Science and Health Sciences (S)

This building is home to the Bachelor of Science, Nursing, Natural Resource Science and the Respiratory Therapy program.

Continue down the path between the two buildings and stairs, cross the road and stop in front of the white building.

18 Retail Meat

At TRU, we have the only meat cutting program in BC. Every Thursday, the program sells a variety of meat, including cuts of meat, sausages, beef jerky, chicken and seafood.

Walk along to the front of the building.

19 Culinary Arts and Accolades Restaurant (CATC)

The Culinary Arts program is for students who want to become professional chefs. During the weekdays, the Culinary Arts Training Cafeteria is open for breakfast and lunch and provides a wide variety of urban fare.

Accolades a nationally-acclaimed dining room operated by both Culinary Arts and Tourism students. It is open Tuesday to Friday and only has limited seating available so reservations are required.

Continue along the path, to the right of the grass clearing to the front of the Library.

20 Library

TRU LibraryThe library contains a collection of over 250,000 books, academic journals, electronic resources, newspapers and videos. There is study space available for students and Librarians are provided to help with your research needs. You will need your student ID card to sign books out.
