Title: 2010 Fraser River Sockeye: What went right?
Are the famous Adams River sockeye salmon so different from other Fraser sockeye that returns could go from the all time worst to the best in one year? As Stephen Hume (Vancouver Sun, 30/08/2010) said "These are days of miracle and wonder for those of us who care about the fate of wild salmon." How true! But unless you subscribe to Mother Nature celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Thompson Rivers University in one great show ... there are reasons for these events that are not yet understood.
This talk will be about the wonder of the Adams River sockeye salmon, their challenges through time, and how could returns in 2009 and 2010 be explained. The "experts" do not have a definitive explanation but there is a consensus building on the critical life periods for Fraser sockeye, and what should be done in the future. In the present though, we can celebrate this historic return and participate in the 'Salute to the Sockeye' in October (Rodrick-Haig Brown Provincial Park).
